The Drakensberg/Okhahlamba area will leave up to its moniker of “a water factory”, as the source of the 502km-long uThukela River, in the upcoming inaugural Drakensberg Extravaganza on the 25th and the 26th November 2017.
Event management company Drakensberg Productions, in collaboration with Okhahlamba Local Municipality; the KwaZulu-Natal Department of Arts, Culture, Sport and Reacreation; Drakensberg Tourism; UKHOZI FM; The Mercury and Isolezwe, presents the Drakensberg Extravaganza on 24-26 November 2017. A two-day sporting bonanza will keep athletes and spectators entertained, preceded by the inaugural JT Gumede Memorial Lecture on the 24th.
Event organiser Sipho Ndaba says: “A feast for sport fanatics and water babies will be in the offing on the 25th. Avid runners will pound a scenic route in the 23km Josiah Gumede Marathon, while casual runners will enjoy themselves in the 8km Fun Run. While all athletes will be taking in the sights, smells and sounds of the picturesque Drakensberg, there will be prizes galore for the winners.
“Also, established cyclists will compete in the 101km Cycling Race. They will come from national cycling clubs, thus promoting the Drakensberg tourism attractions. Local exhibitors and vendors are urged to take full advantage of the opportunities.
“On the next day, the 26th, golfers will tee up in the Golf Tournament at Monks Cowl Resort, while for water enthusiasts and locals, there will be a Canoeing Display and a Jet Ski Race at Woodstock Dam. There will also be a Fishing Competition. In line with our government’s social cohesion drive and to help those who are not water babies conquer their fear of water, professional swimmers will be on hand to teach local children the ropes of swimming free of charge,” Ndaba concludes.
Tickets are available at Computicket and Shoprite/Checkers. General tickets cost R150, while VIP tickets cost R600.
